One of the most popular sets of coins produced each year by the Royal Canadian Mint is the Specimen Set. This 2013 collection features some of the highest quality possible coins struck for collectors in an elegant burgundy book format presentation. All of the denominations from the 5 cent to the $2 coin are presented, including the low mintage half dollar. This year, the highlight of the set is a unique $1 coin featuring a Blue Winged Teal, and marks 75 years of conservation in Canada with Ducks Unlimited Canada. While the presentation and quality of coins are excellent, this set remains affordably priced for collectors or to give as a gift. Mintage is limited to 50,000 sets.
Blue Winged Teal:
The Blue-winged Teal, a very small dabbling duck found in wetlands, prairie potholes, and shallow ponds across Canada from late spring to early fall. The second most common duck in North America at the turn of the century, the Blue-winged Teal is a long distance migrant that travels from its North American breeding grounds to overwintering sites as far south as South America. This long flight makes it one of the last duck species to arrive in Canada in spring and among the first to leave in autumn.
