To commemorate the historic 150th anniversary of Confederation, the Royal Canadian Mint celebrates the journey of a nation that is proud, strong and free, with a 2017 commemorative fractional set featuring a beloved national emblem: the maple leaf. An RCM FIRST: First coins to feature dazzling platinum plating, which strikes a beautiful contrast against the coin’s 99.99% pure gold surface. It’s a distinction that only adds to the outstanding beauty and artistry of all four coins. Mintage is limited to just 600 sets. HST/GST exempt.
The Design:
All 4 coins feature platinum plated rims while the 1oz coin also features a platinum plated maple leaf on the reverse.
This exceptional set is packaged in a one-of-a-kind, custom maple wood case that is shaped like a maple leaf! Outside, the natural finish showcases the beautiful wood; each encapsulated coin is securely nestled in the black-flocked interior, while a ribbon holds the certificate in place inside the lid.
All four coins feature a reverse design by Canadian artist Lisa Thomson-Khan that celebrates Canada’s 150th anniversary through a natural portrait of a Canadian icon. A single engraved leaf from a red maple tree (Acer rubrum) gently falls upon a bed of leaves against the reverse proof background. The leaf is lovingly brought to life in impeccable detail, with meticulously engraved veins that run through each lobe towards the leaf’s serrated edge.
