The Design:
Canadian artist Joel Kimmel has created a visually striking design incorporating the Platinum Maple Leaf’s (PML) iconic logo, and the Queen’s effigy that was in circulation when the PML was introduced in 1988. Selectively plated in platinum, they deliver an eye-catching contrast to the gold maple leaf-shaped coin. The $200 face value, double date (1988-2018) and 30 YEARS/ANS appear on reverse with a background pattern of subtle maple leaves that shimmer in the light, while The Queen’s 1988 effigy appears on the obverse against finely engraved details that bring added dimension and texture to the sculpted, three-dimensional leaf.
The maple leaf’s serrated edges and distinctive veining are recreated thanks to meticulous engraving, which remains faithful to the SML’s design but also adds a touch of natural beauty to all three sizes of leaves—including the coin itself.
