While many golden maple leaves have fallen in the Canadian Autumn, this new 2018 $30 coin from the Royal Canadian Mint is the first ever to include a true to life 3D gold leaf sculpted in one gram of 18 karat solid gold. The large and intricately detailed 17 mm wide gold leaf curves and bends above the surface of the engraved two ounce fine silver background in a way never seen before. A wreath of silver maple leaves encircles the gold leaf, while the frosted silver background of the coin also presents the gold leaf as the centre of a Canadian flag. With an exceptional design, a first ever new technology, and an extremely low mintage of just 2,750, demand for this coin is expected to significantly exceed the small quantity minted. GST/HST exempt.
The Design:
The design for this coin has been a collaboration between artist Michelle Grant and Mother Nature. The form of the 18 karat gold maple leaf is true to life, capturing the full realistic 3D detail of a fallen autumn maple leaf with deeply etched veins, a bowed centre and curved edges. Together, the elements create a multi-layered vision of Canada’s most iconic symbol. With the natural hue of the Sugar Maple’s autumn colours sculpted in 18 karat gold, the coin achieves a remarkable sense of dimension, realism and elegance worthy of a place of honour in your collection.
The reverse includes the engraved word “CANADA” and the face value “30 DOLLARS”, while the obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
