This 2014 large format 25 cent pairs engraved and painted flowers with a beautiful rendering of a creature that is native to Canada’s natural landscape. Mintage is 17,500 coins.
The Design:
This coin captures the yellow pond lily in full bloom. The yellow flower occupies the left side of the image field while a bright green pad fills much of the center and right side. On this pad is a leopard frog, which is easily recognizable by its distinctive black spots and colouring. The word “Canada” is engraved along the outer ring, as is “25 Cents and the Year “2014”
The Leopard:
The leopard frog is aptly named for the black spots that dot its brown, greenish-brown, or green skin. It lives in a variety of habitats including wetlands in prairies and woodlands in summer for feeding. In the fall it usually moves to ponds, streams, and rivers which do not freeze to the bottom. In the spring it emerges to seek out ponds and marshes for breeding. It is there that the tadpoles will develop.
