This beautiful and popular full colour coin features a pair of Pintail Ducks floating in their wetland habitat. Mintage is limited to just 17,500 coins.
The Design:
The drake is in the foreground with his head slightly turned to allow a full view of his bill. His mate is by his side. The coin is also engraved with the word “CANADA,” the date “2014” and the face value of “25 CENTS.”
Pintail:
The northern pintail is named for its pin-like tail feathers. These feathers draw attention to the pintail's slender build. Typically the males have a chocolate-brown head, a blue-grey bill and a white neck with combinations of black, grey and white along the back, and a blackish-green patch called the "speculum" shimmering from grey wings. The female's colouring is far more muted to providing it with camouflage while nesting.
The pintail is a fast and agile flyer. It's one of the first migratory birds to return to its Canadian nesting grounds after wintering in the south.
