This 2013 pure silver Royal Canadian Mint $15 proof coin has been inspired by Chinese culture and is based on the hope for long-term peace and good fortune. The elegant and decorative design features an elephant in traditional dressing. The center medallion contains a hologram of two maple leaves which change colour as the coin is turned in the light. Mintage of this coin is just 8,888. Earlier coins in this series have all sold out and can be difficult to find today in the secondary market. The coin weighs just over one ounce of pure silver. As a pure silver coin, it is GST/HST exempt

The Design:

The elephant’s coiled trunk reflects longevity; a chrysanthemum in its ear depicts ease and good fortune.  Engraved under the elephant’s belly are Chinese characters for “peace”. Each type of flower on this coin blooms at different times in a year, as such this coins’ motif is designed to extend a blessing of peace throughout the entire year. 

Hope for long-term peace and good fortune are important markers of Chinese culture—and have helped to build strong and vibrant Chinese communities across Canada. This coin celebrates their heritage by focusing on the great Chinese blessing of peace.
