The Design:
The coin was designed by Canadian artist Arnold Nogy and features a side profile portrait of an Osprey. Its plumage is captured in intricate engraving, its fixed gaze intently survey the surrounding landscape. The bird of prey's closed bill showcases its sharp downward curve. The reverse is engraved with the word “CANADA,” the date “2014” and the face value of “50 CENTS.”
The Osprey:
The osprey weighs 0.9–2.1 kg and its wingspan is 50–66 cm in length. The upperparts are a deep, glossy brown, while the breast is white and sometimes streaked with brown, and the underparts are pure white. The head is white with a dark mask across the eyes, reaching to the sides of the neck. The bill is black, and the feet are white with black talons. A short tail and long, narrow wings with four long, finger-like feathers, and a shorter fifth, give it a very distinctive appearance.
