This 2015 $10 pure silver coin issued by the Royal Canadian Mint is the first coin issued in the colourful songbirds of Canada series. The design features a rendition of the northern cardinal in a tranquil setting. GST/HST exempt.
The Design:
The vibrancy of the birds colour is captured using selective colour that highlights this beautiful songbird. The bird is shown in three quarter profile, sitting nestled amidst leaves and flower blossoms. The front is engraved with the word “CANADA,” the date “2015”, and the face value of “10 DOLLARS.”
The Northern Cardinal:
The Northern Cardinal is a large, long-tailed songbird with a short bill and a prominent crest. The males are brilliant red all over, with a reddish bill and black face immediately around the bill, whereas the females are pale brown overall with warm reddish tinges in the wings, tail, and crest. They have the same black face and red-orange bill.
Often in pairs, they sit low in shrubs and trees or forage on or near the ground. The Northern Cardinal can be found in inhabited areas such as backyards, parks, and forest edges.
