As Canada prepares to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation in 2017, the Royal Canadian Mint celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of the nation's primary architect and first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, with this Proof-quality 99.99% pure silver coin. This coin pays a fitting tribute to one of the most important figures in Canadian history, and would make a thoughtful gift or introduction to collecting for those who enjoy Canadian history and heritage, patriotic coins, or portraiture. Mintage is 10,000 coins. As a pure silver coin struck by the Royal Canadian Mint, this item is GST/HST exempt.
The Design:
The reverse design by Canadian artist Joel Kimmel features a selectively gold plated portrait of Sir John A. Macdonald. Presented standing beside a desk, Sir John A. Macdonald gazes charismatically out from the image-taking much the same pose he would have stood in for Prime Ministerial photos of his day. In his right hand he holds a sheet of paper, showing that he is hard at work tackling the task of nation-building. His left hand rests casually on the table top beside him. This coin is struck in the Mint's highest-quality Proof finish into a half-ounce of fine silver. It has a diameter of 34mm, and text on the reverse that reads "CANADA", "10 DOLLARS", and the year "2015". Curving along the bottom of the rim of the coin is the name "SIR JOHN ALEXANDER MACDONALD".
