One of the most popular sets of coins produced each year by the Royal Canadian Mint is the Specimen Set, featuring some of the highest quality coins struck for collectors. All of the denominations from the five cent to the $2 coin are presented, including the low-mintage half-dollar. This year, the highlight of the set is a unique $1 coin featuring the iconic Blue Jay, a creature that celebrates the beauty of Canada's diverse bird population. While the presentation and quality of coins are excellent, this set remains affordably priced for collectors or to give as a gift. Mintage is limited to 30,000 sets.
The Design:
The reverse of the $1 coin in this specimen set depicts the blue jay enjoying a beautiful sunny day in a natural setting. Viewed from the rear, its distinctive spotted plumage along its wings and broad tail are prominently displayed. Always inquisitive, the blue jay has its head turned to the right, which affords the viewer a glimpse of its facial features and distinctive crest atop the blue jay's head. This image is captured in exquisite detail by the Royal Canadian Mint; the set in its entirety is a fantastic summary of the standard of their craftsmanship.
