This large five ounce pure silver 2016 half dollar Big Coin features selective colour which brings the intricate coat-of-arms design to life in a way never seen before. This coin and all others in the series sold out within minutes of release from the RCM, with 2016 Big Coins now extremely difficult to obtain in the secondary market. With a mintage of just 1,500 coins for one of Canada’s premier quality annual proof coins, this is an extremely limited issue with demand significantly greater than the quantity produced. As a pure silver coin produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, there is no HST or GST applicable on this item.
The Design:
First introduced in 1937 and updated several times, the design features Canada’s official coat-of-arms. While a regular fifty cent coin has a diameter of 27 mm and a weight of just 6.9 grams in base metal, this half dollar has a diameter of 65 mm and has a weight of over 155 grams, or 5 ounces, in pure silver. This is about equal the weight of 23 regular half dollars. The coin is double struck to ensure fine detail and a near flawless surface, while the design is further enhanced with selective colour.
