This large $50 pure silver proof coin is part of a series called “Mythical Realms of the Haida”, and showcases Haida art and culture. The coin contains just over five ounces of pure silver, and as a pure silver coin issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, it is GST/HST Exempt. With an extremely low mintage of just 1500 pieces, this is likely to be a scarce and highly sought after collectible.
The Design:
This coin design by Canadian Artist April White-Sgaana Jaad creates an image of an eagle dancing in the sky. A close look allows the viewer to see its human form beneath the eagle’s “cloak”. He articulates his arms inside the wings as to propel him upward with strength and command. As the eagle readies himself to dance in the sky, his feet in the talons keep the beat of the drum, as his voice sounds. A dance apron with a salmon head is worn around his waist. The circular outline that frames the design represents the nighttime flight, illuminated by the light of the full moon. The front is engraved with the word “CANADA,” the date “2016”, and the denomination “50 dollars”.
