This elegant 2019 $3 coin features the Queen Elizabeth Rose blossoms highlighted with an overlay of rose coloured gold on fine silver. Rosa ‘Queen Elizabeth’ continues its reign as one of the world’s most popular roses, thanks to big showy blooms that instantly add pink-coloured sophistication to a summer garden. Named for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, its distinctive pink blooms have been a favourite of Canadian gardeners, prized for its resilience to harsh climates. Mintage is limited to 10,000. GST/HST exempt.
The Design:
Artist Claudio D’Angelo captures the timeless elegance of Rosa ‘Queen Elizabeth’ on the reverse, where the engraved arrangement depicts the rose in three different stages of bloom. Each flower is enhanced by the selective application of rose gold plating, which stands in for the Queen Elizabeth rose’s natural salmon pink colour. The reverse includes the engraved word “CANADA” and the year “2019” as well as the face value of “3 DOLLARS”. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
The Queen Elizabeth Rose:
This beautiful rose was specially bred in 1954 to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, held one year earlier. It grows up to 1.8 metres (6 feet), and about 90 cm (3 feet) in width, with each bloom measuring up to 10 cm (4 inches) across. This unique pink rose has a long bloom period from summer through to autumn, and a mild fragrance.
