In 2021, Canada’s bi-metallic $2 coin turns 25! To mark the occasion, we begin this retrospective series with a reproduction of the 2006 anniversary tribute to the toonie’s polar bear mascot since 1996. The design has been renewed and upgraded on this collectible, which combines 99.99% pure silver and selective gold plating to capture the look of our famous bi-metallic coin. Mintage is limited to 2,500 coins. HST/GST exempt.
The Design:
The coin’s reverse is a reproduction of the 2006 $2 commemorative circulation coin design by Canadian artist Tony Bianco. It is a variation of the Arctic-themed design that debuted 10 years prior, in 1996, and shows the polar bear gazing up at the aurora borealis. The addition of selective gold plating captures the distinctive look of the bi-metallic circulation coin, which features the words “CANADA” and “2 DOLLARS” on its reverse. The obverse is double dated (“1996 • 2021”) to mark the 25th anniversary of the $2 circulation coin and features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
